Before
you purchase any skincare product, be sure you
know what skin type you are. This way you will ensure that
the products you purchase will work with your skin
and not against it. Not sure what type of skin you have? No
problem. We’re here to help. We have listed the different
skin types so you can purchase the right
Skin eScentuals‘
products created just for you.
Dry Skin:
This type of skin lacks oil and moisture and
is prone to flaking and wrinkling. It can also be more
sensitive to sunlight and chap easily. It looks fine
textured, transparent, patchy and fragile. Tiny expression
lines may be obvious.
How to care for Dry skin:
¯
Cleansing should be done with a
cream-based cleanser by gently massaging it into the skin
with light upward and outward strokes.
Avoid harsh soaps to prevent loss of natural oils and
exposure to sun and air-conditioners which rob the water
content of the skin.
¯
Toning,
which is an essential follow-up of the cleansing process,
removes the last stages of cleanser and dissolves dirt.
Use a toner void of strong astringents
as they are suitable for oily skin. Rose water is one of the
oldest skin fresheners that can be used.
¯
The next step is nourishing the
skin with a moisturizer massaged into the skin in an upward
and outward motion over the face and chin. The drier your
skin, the more generous you should be with your use of
moisturizers, either in cream or liquid form. Pay particular
attention to the area around the eyes.
¯
Moisturizing masques
have proven
beneficial with this type of skin. They infuse your skin
with nourishment - enhancing the look and feel.
Normal Skin:
Usually smooth textured and even tones with tiny pores.
Normal skin has a balanced oil and water content and feels
smooth and velvety.
How to care for Normal skin:
¯¯
Cleansing
the skin with a cream, lotion or milk should be massaged
into the skin with a light upward and outward motion.
¯
Always follow the cleansing routine with
toning
done with a mild skin freshener. Toning stimulates the blood
supply of the skin and gives it a fresh look. It will also
rid your skin of the remaining dirt and make up and improve
the skin texture.
¯
Apply a light
moisturizer
for the daytime. Follow with a creamier moisturizer for
bedtime
Oily Skin:
In
the case of oily skin the sebaceous (oil producing)
glands are over active, which makes the face shiny,
especially the “T-zone”- nose, forehead and chin. The pores
of this skin type are enlarged making it more prone to
blackheads,
pimples
and acne. On the bright side, oily skin types do not tend to
wrinkle.
How to care for Oily skin:
¯
¯
Oily skin needs special
cleansing
to keep the pores unclogged. Women with oily skin need to
adopt a daily method of cleansing to prevent accumulation of
dirt on the skin surface.
Wash your skin with a soap or liquid cleanser (medicated, if
acne is present) in a circular motion using lukewarm water.
Wash for at least one (1) minute.
¯
Scrubs and masques
are particularly helpful with this type of skin. They will
help to pull the dirt from your pores, helping them to look
less noticeable, and will help to balance the oil production
of the sebaceous glands. Do not scrub vigorously! Gently
scrub in a circular motion. Use once or twice per week.
¯
Tone, Tone, Tone
– Toners and/or astringents need to be used twice daily to
clean the skin. This doesn’t mean your skin needs to be dry
and flaky. Overdrying the skin can make skin problems worse.
Avoid putting your hands on your face. Products containing
Willowbark may prove beneficial for this skin type to help
with cell turnover. Licorice Root Extract has been used for
lightening scars due to acne, sun damage and age.
¯
Moisturize.
Yes moisturize. You don’t need a heavy cream-based
moisturizer. But you do need to nourish your skin.
Combination Skin:
In
this case different areas of the face exhibit different
skin qualities
(for
example the forehead maybe greasy while the cheeks are dry,
may exhibit large pores).
It is very common and requires separate
treatment for each area.
How to care for Combination skin:
¯
¯
Cleanse
with a mild soap or liquid cleanser using a circular upward
and outward motion. Scrubs can be used in the oily regions a
couple of times a week.
¯
Tone
the entire face with skin tonic paying particular attention
to the oily areas.
¯
Moisturize
with a light nourishing lotion in the morning. Choose a skin
care product that is not too oily. Before bed follow with a
nighttime crčme on the dry areas.
Sensitive
Skin: This skin type
can be the cause of great annoyance as it can be very itchy
and frequently has a burning sensation. This type of skin
reacts externally and internally to changes in life. It can
be both oily and dry and can be easily disturbed by
skin
care products and cosmetics. Sensitive skin tends to go
blotchy and have broken veins at the same time. It might
show a flushed or reddened look.
How to care for Sensitive skin:
¯
Depending on your particular situation, cleansing, toning
and moisturizing products need to be used with caution. In
general, use mild products free of perfumes, artificial
colors and chemicals. If you experience discomfort, see a
physician to get a thorough diagnosis before buying any skin
care product.
Mature
Skin:
There is not a certain age we can claim as the start of
having mature skin. How fast we get there depends on
environmental damage, diet and genetics. Your skin will tell
you when you’ve hit this stage by showing signs of increased
roughness, wrinkling, irregular pigmentation (coloration) or
inelasticity (sagging). For those of us who have hit this
stage, there are certain life-changing events that will
forever remind us of when we got here –
There was the day your child went off to live the college
life,
The day you were told you were going to be a Grandmother
(and I don’t mean a really good mom), and
The day we saw how our face looked in the mirror when it was
bent forward! You know, when your mouth dropped open and you
hurriedly looked around to see if anyone saw that!
Your skin requires
different care as you age. As we grow older our skin
doesn't produce new cells at the same pace. Often we develop
enlarged pores and the effects of the sun become evident in
sunspots, freckles and
wrinkles.
Sorry, I’m not here to tell you there is a 24 hr miracle
cream out there, but there are some topical products we can
use to help the appearance of our skin:
¯
Cleansing
should be done with a
cream-based cleanser by gently massaging it into the skin
with light upward and outward strokes. Avoid harsh soaps to
prevent loss of natural oils and exposure to sun and
air-conditioners, which rob the water content of the skin.
¯Toning,
which is an
essential follow-up of the cleansing process, removes the
last stages of cleanser and dissolves dirt.
Use a toner void of
strong astringents as they are suitable for oily skin.
¯Moisturizer
should be a
staple on your bathroom shelf. Here are some of our
suggested natural ingredients to look for in your daily
moisturizer: 1Rosewater, for hydration, 2Rosehip Oil, for
its toning and wrinkle smoothing effect, 3Grapeseed Oil
and/or Vitamin E, both effective against free radicals which
prematurely age the skin
¯Mature
skin greatly benefits from moisture infusing masques
and exfoliating masques (and/or peels) to help with cell
turnover
